2017 EXHIBITS & EVENTS
Paul Milosevich
Seeing the world through an artist's eyes, Paul Milosevich has created poignant portraits of people, places and things for more than 60 years, all the while documenting the famous, the infamous and the serenely beautiful world that is unmistakably his alone. Richly detailed family portraits, top of the charts singers and song writers, world renowned athletes, vistas and interiors, and subtle, undiscovered moments of inanimate objects all join together to create his vast array of paintings and drawings. Join us on a journey of his work through the decades which may leave you calmly rethinking your own view of this magnificent and ever changing world.
My roots are in Trinidad. Whatever accomplishments or recognition that has come my way is the result of formative years spent in the shadow of Fisher’s Peak. Growing up on a immigrant-family farm next to a wonderful golf course, getting a good education in Trinidad public schools and capping it off by studying under my mentor Arthur Roy Mitchell — I realize that I’ve been very, very lucky. Thank you, Trinidad, and thank you, Arthur Roy Mitchell!” -Paul Milosevich

Paul Milosevich Opening Night Reception -Saturday May 20, 2017
Private Party • Museum Members, Sponsors and Invited Guests 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.
Artist Paul Milosevich was born here, in Trinidad, in 1936 and studied art at Trinidad State Junior College with our museum namesake, Arthur Roy Mitchell. Paul graduated from California State University, Long Beach and was an art instructor for over ten years at both Odessa College and Texas Tech University in Texas. The museum is thrilled to exhibit his works from the 1950s through today with this exhibit that is curated by Paul himself.
Paul's intimate portrait work of many singers, songwriters and musicians gave him the distinct honor of receiving the "Stephen Foster" award by the Nashville Songwriters' Hall of Fame. He was also the first fine artist ever inducted into the West Texas Walk of Fame surrounding the Buddy Holly statue in Lubbock, TX. A 30-year retrospective book, Out of the Ordinary: The Art of Paul Milosevich, published by Texas Tech University Press is an intimate look at the art and life of Milosevich.
Paul is an avid golfer who has been commissioned by the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) to produce many portraits and even co-authored the book Texas Golf Legends, which contains 100 Milosevich golfing legends portraits. Milosevich was also commissioned as the Official Portrait Artist for the victorious 1999 U.S. Ryder Cup Team whose members included Team Captain Ben Crenshaw, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Payne Stewart, who passed away tragically just a short time after.
Paul's work can be seen in seven national museums and numerous public and private collections including: The National Ranching Heritage Museum, Museum of the Southwest, the Disney Corporation, Buick Museum, PGA of America, US Golf Association, Museum of Texas Tech University, Royal & Ancient Museum (Scotland), National Golf Hall of Fame, Pro Football Hall of Fame, Texas Sports Hall of Fame, and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and the A.R. Art of the Gun June 9 and 10, 2017
Friday June 9th -9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Saturday June 10th -9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Admission is $10 per person per day. Tickets will be sold at the door Art of the Gun, a gun show highlighting the craftsmanship and history of American guns. Accomplished gun builders will show off a variety of workmanship on both modern and historic guns, including rifles, shotguns and muzzle loaders. Doug Turnbull of New York will bring a custom Winchester rifle and a restored shotgun. His guns are often graced with exquisite color case hardening, a quenching process that leaves rainbow colors on gun metal. Lee Hadaway of Trinidad, a Trinidad State graduate, will bring a commemorative take down lever action rifle. The process, which Hadaway has taught at Trinidad State summer courses, involves cutting a rifle in half and intricately installing threads to both ends. This allows the gun to be transported in two parts and then put back together for firing. Master engraver Jim Blair of Wyoming will bring some of his incredibly detailed guns to the show. Blair’s designs are shockingly intricate and truly an art form, whether attached to a gun or not. Another fine engraver is Les Schowe of Louisville, Colorado. He will show engraved pistols and flintlock rifles at Art of the Gun. He’s a retired engineer who has become a craftsman. He engraves professionally and teaches one-on-one engraving classes at all skill levels. Art of the Gun is held this year in conjunction of Trinidad State’s 40/70 celebration, commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Trinidad State Gunsmithing School, and the 40th anniversary of Trinidad State’s NRA Summer Gunsmithing Series. Established in 1925, Trinidad State Junior College was the first community college in Colorado. With campuses in Trinidad and Alamosa, Colorado, we provide an affordable and accessible education to students in southern Colorado and beyond. Trinidad State offers unique academic programs in fields such as Aquaculture, Cosmetology, Welding, Nursing and Massage Therapy. We also have an Electrical Line Technician program as well as Nursing, Art, Theater and Machining in addition to traditional Arts and Sciences classes and a guaranteed transfer program through a partnership with four-year colleges and universities in Colorado. We are also home to one of the first, and by most accounts, the premier Gunsmithing School in the United States.
