“Listen – nature is speaking to you” - A.R. Mitchell
The Shadowed Mesa
Together we plunge into the heart of this cherished collection never before seen by the public. Travel along the mesas and down through the arroyos. Sense the life, the energy, and the vibrancy these sensitive brushstrokes capture.
Reaching beyond his affinity for the “Wild West,” Mitchell also fostered a deep love for the calm serenity of earth’s canvas. His volume of landscape pieces illustrates how vital taking the time for reflection was to him. In this peaceful state, Mitchell harnessed the spirits of light and shadow to produce his masterful portrayal of the Trinidad country.
Shadows rest. Shadows contrasting pigment and value, protection and weight, movement and stillness. For Mitchell, shadows didn’t simply cloud the landscape; shadows sheltered it from nature’s storms.
In light of the shadows, find rest in this place.

This exhibit was curated and executed entirely by Western State Colorado University Master in Gallery Management and Exhibits Specialization students Ruthann Cranford, Jill Fahey, Torrie Nickel, and Barbara Sibley, under the direction of instructors Thaddeus Smith, Kerry Mason, and Heather Orr.
How the Exhibit Was Created
In partnership with the museum, students and instructors from Western State Colorado University Master in Gallery Management and Exhibits Specialization traveled to Trinidad and spent four days curating and executing this large and wonderful exhibit of Mitchell's landscape paintings. The result is an exquisite collection of colorful views of Trinidad and the surrounding areas that may make you rethink Mitchell's place in the history of Western art. |
